For so long the poster boy of boxing’s heavyweight division, Anthony Joshua has been facing a new reality in recent months.Suddenly, the British fighter is on the outside looking in.His star has fallen — even his promoter acknowledges that — in the wake of punishing, back-to-back losses to Oleksandr Usyk that have led many to question Joshua’s ability, even as a two-time world champion.“You can’t be like, ‘Man, it’s been tough, you know, life’s been down,’” Joshua told the Associated Press. “You always have to walk with your head held high, chest out.“It’s a different perspective for me now, but it’s not one that rules me or makes any difference to my behavior.”So, while the biggest heavyweight fights are being made — or, in the case of the collapsed bout between Usyk and Tyson Fury, not made — around him, Joshua is adapting to his new status and beginning a fresh phase in his career. The hunter, as opposed to the hunted. The pressure, however, is still very much on him.On April 1, Jo...Armed and dangerous shooting suspect located

By MICHELLE CHAPMAN (AP Business Writer)Shares of Coinbase tumbled 15% Thursday after the cryptocurrency trading platform received a warning from the Securities and Exchange Commission that it could face securities charges. The cryptocurrency trading platform said in an SEC filing late Wednesday that it had received a Wells Notice from the agency, which indicates that regulators believe laws protecting investors were violated. Among the practices being targeted by the SEC is “staking,” which is “Coinbase Earn” by the company. Users of trading platforms can stake their cryptocurrency, essentially locking up some of their assets, in exchange for payment later, much like earning interest rates in a savings account. Those assets are used by platforms like Coinbase Global Inc. to guarantee other transactions taking place on the blockchain. The SEC says Coinbase and other platforms must register as a securities platform to offer such services, and only after it is a...Jimmy Butler’s best arriving right on schedule for Heat: ‘You just kind of watch the magic’

From the moment the Miami Heat signed Jimmy Butler to his four-year, $184 million extension in August 2021, the question was how the contract, one that carries him through his 38th birthday, would age.So far, particularly at the moment, the answer is to perfection. And for more than the 35 points he scored in Wednesday night’s 127-120 victory over the New York Knicks at Miami-Dade Arena. It was yet another moment of Butler meeting the moment amid the Heat’s scramble for Eastern Conference playoff seeding, with an arguably even more meaningful moment at hand Saturday against the visiting Brooklyn Nets, a game that could allow the Heat to move into No. 6 in the conference,“I mean, honestly, it’s really winning time right now,” Butler said.Wednesday marked the ninth consecutive game Butler scored 20 or more, tying his longest streak since joining the Heat in the 2019 offseason. Over those nine games, he is averaging 28.5 points. Further, in his 15 games sinc...Book ban attempts in U.S. hit record high in 2022, library org says

By HILLEL ITALIE (AP National Writer)NEW YORK (AP) — Attempted book bans and restrictions at school and public libraries continue to surge, setting a record in 2022, according to a new report from the American Library Association released Thursday.More than 1,200 challenges were compiled by the association in 2022, nearly double the then-record total from 2021 and by far the most since the ALA began keeping data 20 years ago.“I’ve never seen anything like this,” says Deborah Caldwell-Stone, who directs the ALA’s Office for Intellectual Freedom. “The last two years have been exhausting, frightening, outrage inducing.”Thursday’s report not only documents the growing number of challenges, but also their changing nature. A few years ago, complaints usually arose with parents and other community members and referred to an individual book. Now, the requests are often for multiple removals, and organized by national groups such as the conservative Moms for Liberty, which has a mission of “...Stocks rise to recover much of steep loss from day before

By STAN CHOE (AP Business Writer)NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks are rising Thursday to recover much of their steep loss from a day before, when markets tumbled into the close. The S&P 500 was 1% higher in early trading. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 231 points, or 0.7%, at 32,261, as of 9:45 a.m. Eastern time, while the Nasdaq composite was 1.4% higher. A day earlier, stocks fell sharply after the Federal Reserve indicated that while the end may be near for its market-rattling hikes to interest rates, it still doesn’t expect to cut rates this year. Markets lost momentum after Fed Chair Jerome Powell said that, along with an insistence that it could keep raising rates if inflation stays high. But traders on Thursday were still largely betting the Fed will cut rates later this year. Such cuts can act like steroids for markets, juicing prices for stocks, bonds and other investments. They would relax the pressure on the economy, but they could also give inflation more...Latest news
