The UN food agency says that 1 in 5 children who arrive in South Sudan from Sudan are malnourished JUBA, South Sudan (AP) — At least one in five children arriving in South Sudan from Sudan are malnourished and more than 90% of arrivals haven’t eaten in days, the U.N. food agency said Tuesday. The World Food Program said that nearly 300,000 people have arrived in South Sudan in the last five months — the majority of whom are South Sudanese. South Sudan plunged into civil war in 2013, forcing thousands of its citizens to flee to neighboring countries, including Sudan.“We are seeing families leave one disaster for another as they flee danger in Sudan only to find despair in South Sudan,” says Mary-Ellen McGroarty, WFP’s country director in South Sudan.Sudan plunged into chaos in mid-April when long-simmering tensions between the military, led by Gen. Abdel Fattah Burhan, and the Rapid Support Force paramilitary, or RSF, commanded by Mohammed Hamdan Dagalo, escalated into open warfare. The WFP is appealing for additional funding of more than $120 million to meet humanitarian needs at t...

Stock market today: Wall Street buckles again under the weight of higher bond yields NEW YORK (AP) — Wall Street is sinking sharply Tuesday as it focuses on the downside of a surprisingly strong job market. The S&P 500 was 1.3% lower in midday trading and nearly back to where it was in May. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 371 points, or 1.1%, at 33,062, as of 11:16 a.m. Eastern time, and the Nasdaq composite was 1.7% lower.Stocks fell as the pressure on them cranked even higher from rising Treasury yields in the bond market. Such weight has been the main reason the stock market has lost more than 40% of its value since the end of July, after charging higher for much of the year. The 10-year Treasury yield climbed again Tuesday, up to 4.76% from 4.69% late Monday and from just 0.50% early in the pandemic. It’s near its highest level since 2007 and rose after a report showed U.S. employers have many more job openings than expected. When bonds are paying so much more in interest, they pull investment dollars away from stocks and other investments prone to ...

Rest of hurricane season in ‘uncharted waters’ because of El Niño, record ocean temperatures (CNN) — Experts fear an already active hurricane season could come to an eventful and exceptional end as unusually warm, storm-boosting ocean temperatures and a slow-to-emerge El Niño combine. The Atlantic season and its 18 named storms has already been above average, according to Phil Klotzbach, a hurricane researcher with Colorado State University. But October usually signals changes in activity and the areas where storms form. The first half of October is typically the final stretch of the busiest time of the Atlantic hurricane season. The number of storms usually begins to drop off quickly toward the end of October and craters by the time the season ends on November 30.Storms that do form typically do so in areas that are much too close for comfort – in the Gulf of Mexico, near the Bahamas and the western Caribbean – rather than in the open Atlantic, where storms like Category 5 Hurricane Lee formed earlier this year. This means places like Florida, which was devastated by Category ...

Sign up here.LONDON — In the push to close a yawning polling deficit, Britain’s Conservatives have conjured an unlikely nemesis: easily accessible amenities.15-minute cities are an urban planning concept designed to ensure day-to-day services like banks, pharmacies and supermarkets are all within a 15-minute walk or cycle of residents’ homes.Advocates argue such planning improves public health and wellbeing, and can help the environment by cutting dependency on vehicles. But the governing party — facing a bruising election next year — leapt on opposition in a bid to show it’s on the side of motorists. In doing so, some observers fear it’s playing right into the hands of conspiracy theorists — and may not scoop up votes, either. “This language is lifted directly from the conspiracist movement. It is hard to see who it...
