TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA/NEXSTAR) — Buying a house in the U.S. isn't cheap, and according to a report from Redfin, it is now harder than ever to afford one — even in Denver.Sky-high mortgage rates and rising home prices have made it more difficult than ever, especially for first-time home buyers, Redfin said in the report, which was released Tuesday. The average rate on the benchmark 30-year home loan rose to 7.57% from 7.49% last week, mortgage buyer Freddie Mac said earlier this month. It's the highest level in more than two decades. To afford a median-priced U.S. home now, Redfin said buyers must earn $114,627, up 15% ($15,285) from a year ago and up more than 50% since the start of the pandemic. The real estate website said a typical household earns about $40,000 less than that. This is the wealthiest person in Colorado, new Forbes report shows "Hourly wages have risen in 2023, but not nearly as fast as the income necessary to afford a home is rising: The average U.S. hourly wage has i...This Florida nurse’s killing remained unsolved for 3 decades. (CNN) — Teresa Lee Scalf’s family has searched for the name of the person who killed their loved one for over three decades. Now, thanks to new DNA analysis, Scalf’s family has an answer – and some semblance of closure – because investigators say they have solved the 1986 murder case.Donald Douglas, who was 33 at the time, is responsible for Scalf’s death, Polk County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release Monday. Douglas died of natural causes in 2008 at the age of 54, the department said.Scalf, 29, was the target on October 27, 1986 of a “sexually motivated” attack that ended in her killing in her Lakeland, Florida, home, where she was “severely cut and had significant defensive wounds on her hands,” according to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office.“He aggressively stabbed her and cut her,” Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd said in a news conference Monday, noting Scalf was nearly decapitated. In 1986, investigators collected evidence from the crime scene, including blood that did n...East Bridgewater police investigating hit-and-run involving child on bicycle

An investigation continued Tuesday after police said an 11-year-old girl on a bicycle was struck in a hit-and-run crash in East Bridgewater over the weekend. East Bridgewater police said the crash happened on Sunday around 5 p.m. near Bedford Street. Once on scene, police said, an initial investigation indicated the girl was hit while riding through a small path that leads from Bedford Street to the rear parking lot of Central Elementary School. Police said paramedics evaluated the girl on scene. The child’s mother also responded to the scene, according to police, and declined medical transportation for her daughter.Police released video of the crash on Tuesday. In an attached statement, police said investigators determined a blue SUV, possibly a 2023-2024 blue Lexus NX entered the Central School parking lot from Central Street and tried to use the parking lot as a cut-through to Bedford Street. Police said the car then turned around and traveled back toward the ...Hundreds protest in West Bank after hospital explosion in Gaza

WASHINGTON (AP) — Republicans rejected Rep. Jim Jordan for House speaker on a first ballot Tuesday, as an unexpectedly numerous 20 holdouts denied the hard-charging ally of Donald Trump the GOP majority needed to seize the gavel.More voting is expected as Jordan works to shore up support to replace the ousted Kevin McCarthy for the job. The House went into recess as the firebrand leader of the GOP’s hard-right flank struggled to take a central seat of U.S. power. After two weeks of angry Republican infighting since McCarthy was removed by hard-liners, the House vote quickly became a showdown for the gavel. Reluctant Republicans refused to give Jordan their votes, viewing the Ohio congressman as too extreme for the powerful position of House speaker, second in line to the presidency.Jordan said afterward he was not surprised and expected to do better in the next round, expected later Tuesday.“We feel confident,” he said, ducking into a leadership office ...House Speaker Ronald Mariano says he will run for re-election in 2024, seek speakership

He is in his second term as speaker of the House, taking over for former Speaker Robert DeLeo who was the longest-serving person in that role.Asked if he would run for re-election, Mariano said “sure.” Asked if he would run for speaker next session, Mariano again said “sure.” But it “remains to be seen,” Mariano said, whether he would serve out the rest of that next term.“The speaker looks forward to the work ahead the remainder of this term. He intends to run for re-election for his seat and the speakership. By MICHAEL KUNZELMAN (Associated Press)WASHINGTON (AP) — A judge on Tuesday sentenced a former Republican candidate for Michigan governor to two months behind bars for joining a mob’s Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol, where he riled up other rioters and ripped a tarp outside the building.Ryan Kelley, who finished fourth in a primary field of five Republican gubernatorial candidates last year, pleaded guilty in July to a misdemeanor for his role in the siege.Several months before his guilty plea, Kelley posted on social media that the Capitol riot was an FBI “set up.” His campaign posted the words “political prisoner” on Facebook after his June 2022 arrest.U.S. District Judge Christopher Cooper told Kelley that he misused his platform as a candidate for public office by promoting lies about election fraud, including the baseless claim that Jan. 6 was somehow part of an FBI plot.“A lot of folks voted for you. A lot of folks followed you,” Cooper said before sentencing Kelley t...Prosecutors seeking to recharge actor Alec Baldwin in fatal shooting on movie set

Much of the early season buzz around the Bruins has been about Matt Poitras, and rightly so. Poitras very well could be the top six centerman the B’s have been looking to develop for over a decade now.But the emergence of fellow rookie John Beecher has been a welcome and timely development as well. Beecher, centering the fourth line between Milan Lucic and Jakub Lauko that was the one unit that coach Jim Montgomery left alone in Monday’s practice, has helped mitigate the underrated loss of Tomas Nosek in the early going of the season.Seeing just 12.5% of offensive zone starts, Beecher so far has shown himself to be a reliable defensive-minded pivot while holding his own in the faceoff dot (12 up, 10 down).Plenty more challenges lay ahead, but so far so good.“I’m definitely getting a little more comfortable out there and settling in nicely. The guys have made it a good transition for us. They’ve helped out a lot,” said Beecher, the 30th overall pick in the 201...Latest news
