Rats beware: DC dog owners on the prowl for city vermin

Published Mon, 24 Feb 2025 05:45:59 GMT

It’s no secret D.C. has a rat problem, but what you may not know is that some local dog owners are trying to help.Bomani Mtume and his dog, Barto, are among a number of dog owners who patrol for vermin around the Adams Morgan neighborhood in Northwest on Saturday nights.Mtume picked up the idea from the Ryders Alley Trencher-fed Society (or R.A.T.S.), a New York City-based group that sets up rat hunts with their dogs. He started taking Barto out on hunts with a similar D.C.-based group in September, and has since carried on the work independently with a few other owners. The actual process of the dogs capturing and killing a rat is as graphic as you’d expect.“They usually grab them and shake them until their neck breaks, and then they let them go and go for another one,” Mtume told WTOP, saying that the dogs don’t eat the rats after killing them.Barto might not be the most imposing canine on the block — he’s a Cairn Terrier, the same breed as Toto ...

Casey Comber took the time to take in the sights and sounds that surrounded the array of races at Saturday’s BAA Invitational Mile.Comber had just finished a strong second to Hobbs Kessler in 4:08.27 and his comments echoed those of several athletes who competed in the three-lap race on Commonwealth Avenue and Boylston Street.“It’s definitely different from the track, but it’s fun, said Comber, a five-time All-American at Villanova. “This is what racing should be. Early return of warm weather responsible for increase in Boxelder bugs across GTA

And so what happens is we see them in the fall when they’re getting together on the side of buildings and trees – warm places, getting ready to hibernate,” says Darryl Gwynne, professor emeritus of biology at the University of Toronto. “Then they go into crevices, trees and firewood and certainly into houses – they love to crawl under the siding of houses.”Gwynne adds the fairly mild winter may be responsible for the increased numbers we are seeing this spring. The bugs are attracted to sunny, heat-reflecting surfaces like windows, concrete, and homes with southern or western exposure. They also tend to keep close to their food sources such as boxe...
