DENVER (KDVR) -- Property values have increased significantly, and because of that, Colorado property owners face increased property tax bills.Proposition HH was rejected by voters this week. While it would have provided some property tax relief, it also would have increased the state spending limit by keeping some of the revenue surplus normally refunded under the Taxpayer's Bill of Rights. Proposition HH results: Colorado voters reject property tax measure | Election 2023 Property owners would have had some immediate property tax relief with reduced rates, but an analysis by the Common Sense Institute found that, eventually, TABOR refunds would be reduced more than the reduction of property taxes. After Prop HH's failure, Gov. Jared Polis called the General Assembly to meet for a special legislative session later this month, saying: "We need to act for short-term property relief now." But without Prop HH or legislative action on high property tax bills, what would be at stake?A C...

What you need to know about the FDA’s proposed ban of brominated vegetable oil

(CNN) — The US Food and Drug Administration has announced a proposal to revoke the nationwide regulation authorizing the use of brominated vegetable oil, or BVO, in food. After a review of evidence, “the intended use of BVO in food is no longer considered safe after the results of studies conducted in collaboration with the National Institutes of Health (NIH) found the potential for adverse health effects in humans,” the FDA said in a November 2 statement. What exactly is BVO, what is it used for, and what kinds of foods contain it? What is the evidence for revoking its authorization? And what about another food additive, red dye No. 3? California has already passed legislation to ban it, along with BVO and two other food additives. How worried should people be about products that contain BVO and red dye No. 3, and are there steps they could be taking to reduce any risks? To help us with these questions, I spoke with our CNN Wellness medical expert, Dr. Leana Wen. Parkland parent files human rights lawsuit against U.S. over gun policies

Published Sun, 23 Feb 2025 15:53:11 GMT

A grieving parent from the Marjory Stoneman Douglas massacre, Manuel Oliver, is taking legal action against the United States, alleging that the country’s gun policy violates basic human rights. “My son was shot 280,000 victims ago, so this is happening really often, we had a mass shooting a couple of weeks ago and we don’t see anyone offended about this,” he said in a past interview. “So sometimes you have to take things by your own hand.”Oliver, whose son Joaquin was a victim of the 2018 tragedy, claims that lax gun control allows firearms to fall into the wrong hands, posing a threat to citizens. In the lawsuit, Manuel and Patricia Oliver argue that the U.S. has not implemented widely accepted measures to protect its citizens from the ongoing threat of gun violence. The couple is currently on a nationwide tour, “Guac’s Magical Tour,” visiting 23 states as they commemorate what would have been Joaquin’s 23rd birthday. The t...

Tesla is furious it’s not in EU’s Chinese subsidy probe. Here’s why

Published Sun, 23 Feb 2025 15:53:11 GMT

BRUSSELS — For once, Elon Musk isn’t front and center, and he isn’t happy about it.His electric car company Tesla has been excluded from the European Commission’s list of companies that are being examined in a probe of Chinese subsidies for electric vehicle companies as the bloc tries to shield itself from a growing flood of Chinese imports. The Commission reaffirmed its provisional sample choice in a final decision on Friday.Tesla is by far the biggest exporter of electric vehicles from China into Europe, so wants to be involved in the EU’s subsidy investigation. If it is excluded, its lawyers argue, the U.S. electric vehicle giant could find itself unfairly targeted by countervailing duties imposed on the basis of Chinese subsidies awarded to other companies. Instead, the Commission picked three Chinese carmakers: BYD, SAIC and Geely.“The Commission’s decision to exclude from the sample the by far largest exporting producer is entirely unprecedented a...

Montez Sweat makes his presence known — and what the win means for the No. 1 pick: Brad Biggs’ 10 thoughts on the Chicago Bears

Published Sun, 23 Feb 2025 15:53:11 GMT

10 thoughts after the Chicago Bears won during “Thursday Night Football” for the second time this season. No style points were earned Thursday at Soldier Field when the Bears got in one of those ugly games in a short week that either looks like a defensive battle or bad offensive football, depending on your point of view. Far more valuable is the boost they will get from the first-round draft pick they have coming from the Carolina Panthers in April, a selection that improves after the 16-13 victory.1. When the Bears began actively shopping the No. 1 overall pick more than eight months ago, the first question I had was pretty simple. What quarterback is the team that trades with GM Ryan Poles coming up to get? There wasn’t a consensus No. 1 pick and, if there was, I think the Bears probably would have held onto the selection and taken the quarterback.“Good question,” one player personnel director told me. “Can’t be Bryce Young though.”As...
