(CNN) — The new year will bring new challenges for lawmakers, who must confront crises at home and abroad as the 2024 elections take center stage and threaten to deepen partisan divisions on Capitol Hill. The race for the White House is poised to play a major role in influencing what gets done – and what doesn’t – on Capitol Hill, and the balance of power in Congress is at stake with key Senate and House races on the ballot. The most pressing issues are a pair of government shutdown deadlines in January and February and a high-stakes effort to strike a deal over border security and aid for Ukraine and Israel. It’s far from clear, however, whether lawmakers will be able to reach consensus over border security and foreign aid and legislation to avert a shutdown. As the 2024 election increasingly dominates the political landscape, consensus could become even more difficult as partisan disputes risk becoming harder to overcome on Capitol Hill.Negotiations ongoing over border secu...Hundreds of migrants dropped off in New Jersey, bypassing New York City restrictions

(CNN) — A migrant surge continues to overwhelm authorities at the US-Mexico border — and in US cities where many asylum-seekers are being sent. Here are the latest developments:Transit points in New Jersey have been used by buses to evade new rules aimed at curbing the massive numbers of arrivals in New York City. This weekend, at least four buses stopped at the Secaucus Junction train station in New Jersey, according to a news release from Secaucus’ mayor.“From what we understand after being dropped at the train station the migrants then took trains to New York City,” Michael Gonnelli said. “At this point in time it seems train tickets are being secured for the migrants and they have been making their way to their final destination.”It appeared “bus operators have figured out a loophole in the system in order to ensure the migrants reach their final destination, which is New York City,” he said. The New York City order, issued last week by Mayo...Russian missiles hit Ukrainian cities, killing 5 and injuring almost 100, Kyiv officials say

SAN DIEGO — A whale watching boat appeared to nearly capsize near Mission Bay on Thursday as it dodged abnormally large waves rocking the vessel.A video of the boat, which was captured by an onlooker on the other side of the Mission Bay Jetty sign, was obtained by FOX 5 and can be viewed in the player below. It appeared to be coming into the channel as the choppy waters tipped the vessel from side to side. Similar videos of the boat nearly turning over while it dodged waves pulling into the channel were posted to Instagram on Friday. No injuries were reported to anyone on board. This incident came at an interesting time for boaters: rare orca sightings in Southern California have had people flocking to whale watching tours for a chance to spot one of the creatures while large waves — anywhere from eight to 12 feet — have pounded the region's coast.San Diego was put under a high surf warning and coastal flood advisory earlier this week. The warning lasts until 2 a.m. on Jan. 1, 2...Why do food prices keep rising?
