Opinion: The Palestinian and Jewish experiences are both valid

Published Wed, 05 Mar 2025 01:59:56 GMT

For Jews and Palestinians these are painful and difficult days.On Oct. 7, Hamas gunmen indiscriminately murdered about 1,200 Israelis. The victims were not settlers. They did not live in the West Bank or any disputed territories. In fact, many were peace activists. Their deaths break my heart.Israel’s military action in the weeks since have killed many thousands of Palestinians. Most of the casualties are civilians. Their deaths also break my heart. Many of the loudest voices in our community want to apportion blame to one side or the other, to deny Israel’s right to exist as a Jewish state or deny the legitimacy of a Palestinian national identity. I want to suggest something else, something more difficult: If we truly want to find a just resolution to this conflict, we have to recognize that both sides are right — and both sides are wrong. We have to hold the pain and the suffering, as well as the national aspirations, of Palestinians and Israeli Jews. We have to acknowledge th...

Granderson: Climate change costs fall on states that can’t afford them

Published Wed, 05 Mar 2025 01:59:56 GMT

Between 2018 and 2022 many of the states with high rates of poverty — Oklahoma, New York — were also the states that suffered the most damage from extreme weather. A new climate study indicates things are going to get worse for those places and for poor people. The federal government’s Fifth National Climate Assessment was published last week and concludes that we are literally running out of places to hide.Right now, according to the report, more than half of all Americans live somewhere that’s projected to have more extreme weather more often. No matter how much humans might try to put a red-blue spin on climate issues, the weather doesn’t care: The climate damage price tags for Texas and California were roughly the same during the span the report assessed. In 2021, future presidential candidate Ron DeSantis referred to aggressive climate change policy as “left-wing stuff.” But wouldn’t you know it, Florida — the state where DeSa...

America’s Unwavering Support for Israel Fuels Iran-Backed “Axis of Resistance”

Published Wed, 05 Mar 2025 01:59:56 GMT

On the day meant to honor Hezbollah’s own martyrs, the group’s secretary general, Hassan Nasrallah, dedicated a considerable portion of his speech to fighters elsewhere in the region. In a televised address on November 11, Nasrallah praised not just Hezbollah’s strikes on Israel launched from southern Lebanon, but also “supporting fronts” in Iraq and Syria, where armed groups have carried out more than 60 attacks on American troops in the past month.“These actions reflect great courage because it is the Americans they are fighting, the Americans whose fleets, aircraft carriers, and bases fill the region,” Nasrallah said of his Iraqi allies. “If you Americans want these operations on the supporting fronts to stop, if you don’t want regional war, you must stop the aggression and war on Gaza.”Nasrallah’s words indicate growing unity among the so-called axis of resistance, a network of Iran-backed actors in the Mideast that includes Hamas, Hezbollah, the Syrian government, the Houthis i...

Is either one truly ready to handle the stage, the moment, the pressure?“You try to make it to where the mindset is always the same because you never know,” FSU coach Mike Norvell said. “But it’s probably different for them.”Wildly different.Rodemaker, a fourth-year junior, will make his second career start in place of the injured Jordan Travis. The Heisman Trophy contender suffered a season-ending injury to his left leg against North Alabama last week, leaving Rodemaker to try to fill some of the biggest cleats in program history.Rodemaker’s only previous start came against lower-division Jacksonville State in 2020 and he’s never played in a road venu...
